Wayne David calls on the UK Government to give our Armed Forces a better deal

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly and Shadow Minister for the Armed Forces and Defence Procurement, has called on the Government to use the occasion of Armed Forces Day to step up when it comes to Armed Forces pay and accommodation and the welfare of veterans.

The last Labour Government created Armed Forces Day in 2006 as a chance for the country to celebrate the work of our service personnel, veterans, cadets and service families. As well as providing an important focus for Britain to pay tribute to our three services, Armed Forces Day also provides an opportunity for us all to ensure that we give the best possible support to those who serve and have served our country.

Locally, the Armed Forces Day celebration took place in Bargoed on Saturday 23 June, with a procession led by local members of the Royal British Legion and cadets. The national celebration will take place in Llandudno, north Wales this Saturday (30 June).

Wayne David said, “This Armed Forces Day I want to pay tribute to the work of our service men and women of the past and present and honour their commitment to keeping us safe.

“But, as we celebrate the dedication of our service personnel, I am concerned that the UK Government need to do more to show how valued they are. There is a recruitment crisis in in all of our Armed Forces, which means that they are all currently below strength, while UK Ministers have not acted to deal with a lot of the issues around pay and housing that I and my colleagues in Labour’s Shadow Defence team have been pressing them on.

“I hope that the Government will reassess this and look at what more they can do to show our Armed Forces how valued they are”.
