Bedroom tax - 25 February 2013

Caerphilly Labour launches Borough-wide bedroom tax petition.

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, and Jeff Cuthbert, Labour AM for Caerphilly, are launching a petition against the so-called bedroom tax.  The petition will cover the whole of the Caerphilly Borough.

On Wednesday 20 March, the petition will be presented to the House of Commons by the three Labour MPs for the Borough - Dai Havard, Chris Evans and Wayne David.

The petition calls on the Government to change its Welfare Reform Act and withdraw the cuts to housing benefit - the so-called bedroom tax.  As things stand, the bedroom tax is to be introduced on 1 April.

Wayne David said, "This is an extremely unfair attack on some of the poorest in our society.  Because of the nature of its housing stock, the Caerphilly Borough will be particularly hard-hit.  There will be over 3,000 families in the Borough who will face a reduction in their housing benefit of between £9.66 and £22.25 per week.  In other words, this is extra that they will have to find every week.

"According to the Tory-led Government if people are not prepared to find this extra money for so-called unoccupied rooms, then they will be expected to move to smaller properties.  The trouble is there are very few one and two bedroom properties in the Caerphilly Borough, and why should people be expected to move when they have been living in a property for many years.

"This bedroom tax is an outrage and I hope that many thousands of people will sign the petition.  Over the next few weeks, the Labour Party will be knocking on people’s doors and I hope there will be mass support for our campaign".
