Wayne David

Member of Parliament for Caerphilly

Elder abuse - 24 May 2013

Wayne David MP says an Inquiry into Elder Abuse is essential.

Wayne David, MP for Caerphilly, has repeated his call for an inquiry into the care standards for elderly people in care homes in Wales.  The call comes after Operation Jasmine failed to lead to the care home owner, Dr Das, standing trial.  In March it was decided that Dr Das was not fit to stand trial because of a physical assault upon him.

Wayne David said “I very much hope the Welsh Government will hold an inquiry in public to examine what lessons can be learnt from the appalling examples of elder abuse which Operation Jasmine highlighted.  While I accept that generally care standards have improved since 2005, when I first drew attention to the way that some elderly people were being treated, it is essential that there is public confidence that all the lessons are being learnt”.

Mr David added “It is important that residents in care homes and their relatives are reassured that the deplorable examples of abuse which Operation Jasmine exposed, can never be repeated.  It is also essential that the relatives of those elderly people who suffered abuse, many of whom have now died, are reassured that after 7 years of police inquiries there can be some kind of closure”.

Following the naming of Dr Das by Wayne David in the House of Commons in 2005 and the examples he gave of elder abuse in Holly House in his Caerphilly Constituency, the Home Office set up Operation Jasmine.  This was the first operation of this kind and cost a total of £11.6 million.  There were 103 neglect cases examined but few cases were brought to court.
