Wayne David expresses his concern that while it is vital Parliament debates the issues around Brexit, it should not be at the exclusion of everything else

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has said that there is a very real danger that Brexit is totally dominating politics with the result that “everything else is being pushed to one side”.

Increasingly since the referendum of June 2016, Brexit has come to dominate the political agenda in the UK. The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has failed to secure the support of the House of Commons for her so-called Brexit deal and is now desperately trying to modify her plan in the hope of getting MPs’ support.

The result of Brexit is that much of government has slipped into the background and political debate has become dominated by our relationship with Europe. While Wayne David acknowledges that the Brexit issue is vital to the future of this country, he believes that it should not push everything else to one side.

Wayne David said, “After Brexit, the second largest number of emails and letters I receive is about the Conservative Government’s welfare changes. Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments mean that thousands of people in the Caerphilly area and beyond are losing out massively. This needs to be highlighted and the point needs to be made that benefit cuts are really hurting those who are already finding it hard to make ends meet.

“Homelessness is a growing problem in Caerphilly and elsewhere and food banks are now a common feature of our society. Brexit shouldn’t be allowed to dominate our politics to such an extent that these and other issues are ignored or forgotten”.
