Government shambles over House of Lords reform - 6 August 2012

House of Lords

Wayne David "aghast" at Coalition Government shambles.

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, and Labour’s Spokesperson for Political and Constitutional Reform, has responded to Nick Clegg’s withdrawal of the House of Lords Reform Bill and his ending of support for parliamentary boundary changes.

Mr David said, "The Coalition Government is in disarray.  I am aghast at Nick Clegg’s statement this afternoon.  The Tories are either unwilling or unable to control their rebels and the Lib Dems are retaliating over boundary changes.  This is not a real government; it is a chaotic shambles.

"I now await the Secretary of State for Wales to formally withdraw her Green Paper on Welsh Assembly Boundaries.  The Green Paper has, at its starting point, the Westminster boundary changes.  If the boundary changes fall, then it follows that there is no basis for Assembly boundary changes.  These changes are therefore as dead as a dodo and Cheryl Gillan needs to give them a decent burial".
