Wayne David welcomes independent review into events surrounding Operation Jasmine.
Wayne David, MP for Caerphilly, has welcomed the announcement by Carwyn Jones, Welsh First Minister, that there is to be “an independent review” into the issues surrounding Operation Jasmine.
Wayne David first raised concerns about the “abuse” of elderly residents in Gwent care homes in 2005. The then Labour Government in Westminster established Operation Jasmine to look into the allegations in a number of care homes.
Although a number of cases were taken to court, there were relatively few convictions and the owner of the care homes in question, Dr Das, is unable to stand trial because of his state of health.
During the past few months relatives of those who suffered the abuse have been calling for an inquiry into the events which led to the abuse taking place. The First Minister announced in the Welsh Assembly today that such a review would take place and a full report would be submitted by the end of next year.
Wayne David said, “I am very pleased that Carwyn Jones has listened to the relatives who have called for such an inquiry. It is the right thing to do and it is essential that lessons are learnt so that the abuse of elderly people in care homes does not happen again.
“It has been announced that Dr Margaret Flynn will lead the review. Dr Flynn is widely respected and has enormous experience, and I and the other Gwent Labour MPs will assist her in her work.”
