Parliamentary boundary review - 23 October 2012

Government continues to waste money on doomed Parliamentary boundary review.

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly and Labour’s spokesperson on Political and Constitutional Reform, has strongly criticised the Government for continuing to “waste” taxpayers’ money on the doomed Parliamentary boundary review.

According to figures obtained from the Boundary Commission under a Freedom of Information request, the Commission in Wales spent over £617,000 up until the end of July this year on the boundary review. It is spending a further £384,000 and will spend an additional £289,000 before the end of the process.

Mr David said, “This is a scandalous waste of money. Virtually every political analyst believes that these boundary changes are dead because the Liberal Democrats are now committed to opposing them. It is necessary for the Government to get these changes through both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and without Liberal Democrat support this is nigh on impossible.

“I therefore call on the Government to end this scandalous waste of money immediately.”

It has been suggested that even if the boundary changes were not adopted by Parliament in 2013, they could be adopted under the next boundary review. This is impossible because the next boundary review, beginning in 2015, will be on the basis of individual electoral registration (IER). This will significantly change the electoral register upon which the boundaries have to be based.
