Wayne David

Member of Parliament for Caerphilly

public talk on Morgan Jones - 17 October 2012

 Morgan Jones

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, will give a talk about one of his predecessors as Member of Parliament for Caerphilly, Morgan Jones.

The talk, Morgan Jones MP: from Conscientious Objector to Member of Parliament, will be given this Saturday afternoon, 20 October, at 2:05pm at Llancaiach Fawr, near Nelson. The talk is part of a history conference organised by the Gelligaer Historical Society.

Mr David said, “Morgan Jones was a great Labour MP. During the First World War he was a Conscientious Objector and in 1921 he became the first Conscientious Objector to be elected as a Labour Member of Parliament. The by-election in which he was elected in 1921 was important because it was the first election contested by the Communist Party, as well as it being highly-charged because of the high level of unemployment.

“Caerphilly has a park named after Morgan Jones, but his name should be better known than what it is. My talk will focus on the early part of Morgan Jones’ life; his career as a Labour MP and a junior Education Minister in two Labour governments will be the subject of another talk”.
