Respect for Shopworkers Week 2012

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, and Hamish Sandison, Labour’s Police and Crime Commissioner for Gwent, have visited the Co-operative Food Store in Nelson to back a campaign calling on shoppers to show “respect” for shopworkers.

The visit is in support of shopworkers’ union Usdaw’s “freedom from fear” campaign, and in particular Respect for Shopworkers Week, which runs between 5 and 9 November.

As a community retailer, the Co-operative Food Store has taken a central role in tackling retail crime and is backing Usdaw’s campaign.

In visiting the store, Hamish Sandison said “This is an important campaign and I give my full support to it. Threats, abuse and assaults of shopworkers are completely unacceptable and if I am successful in my candidacy for Gwent PCC I will do all I can to stamp this out”.

Wayne David said, “Food stores like the Co-op Food Store in Nelson provide an essential service for the community. But I recognise that the anti-social behaviour of a few can have a devastating impact. I commend both the Co-op and Usdaw on this important initiative.”
