Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has said that Members of Parliament should not be allowed to have second jobs.
Wayne David made his position clear on this controversial subject when he spoke on Monday 16 September to the Caerphilly Probus Club. Mr David was asked by members what his view was and he stated emphatically that he thought MPs should spend all their time representing their constituents in Parliament.
Following the expenses scandal of a few years ago, the public spotlight is still very much on MPs. Mr David believes that Members of Parliament as a whole need to do a great deal more to begin to restore public trust. By placing a ban on second jobs, Wayne David believes that this will help to restore public confidence in Parliament.
Wayne David said, "Representing the people of my constituency is a full-time job. I have no other job and if I did, it would mean I would be unable to spend as much time as I do fighting for Caerphilly’s interests. The same should apply to all other MPs. There are far too many MPs who are moonlighting in the legal profession and in big business. This ought to stop".
