Senghenydd Mining Disaster - 10 June 2013

Ed Miliband opens Senghenydd Exhibition.

Ed Miliband, the Leader of the Labour Party, has opened an exhibition in the House of Commons, to commemorate the centenary of the Senghenydd Mining Disaster.

Local MP Wayne David has organised a week-long exhibition to commemorate the worst mining disaster in British history.  On the morning of 14 October 1913, 439 men and boys lost their lives after an explosion in the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd, a small village near Caerphilly.

Ed Miliband and Wayne David both spoke at the launch of the exhibition, as did Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert and Jack Humphreys, Chair of the Aber Valley Heritage Group.

Speaking after the event Wayne David said,"I am delighted that Ed opened the exhibition.  He represents a former mining constituency himself and knows the impact mining has had on local communities.

"It is commendable that the community in Senghenydd has come together and are raising funds for a national memorial.  This memorial will be in Senghenydd but it will be a recognition of all the miners, in all parts of the country, who lost their lives because of the coal industry.  I very much hope that people will continue to donate generously to the fund’".
