Giving my support to a Diabetes UK campaign for clearer food labelling

The most significant debate in Westminster this month surrounded the decision by the Government to join the US and France in launching missiles at Assad’s chemical facilities in Syria.  I have been highly critical of the decision by the Prime Minister not to consult with Parliament prior to any military action, contrary to well established conventions. I strongly support the suggestion that legislation should be passed to put this ‘convention’ on a statutory footing and I have voted for this.

It was a pleasure to sponsor a drop-in for the Brain Tumour Charity, attended by around 40 MPs, and I was able to attend a drop-in organised by Diabetes UK highlighting the need for clear food labelling.  I also held an informative meeting with “Facing the World”, a charity working in Vietnam to help children living with facial disfigurement.

In my Shadow Defence role, I spoke at a Fabians Society event on the future of Britain’s defence, met with representatives from Airbus and attended a briefing session celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the RAF in Wales. I was also pleased to host an all party briefing on the importance of the aerospace and defence sectors in Wales.

Following on from this, I made the point in a debate, on the lack of reference to the defence industry in the UK Government’s industrial strategy.  In Business Questions I deplored the actions of the Government in making the announcement on the award of the contract for a new mechanised infantry vehicle to a German company, without a competitive process, during the Easter recess to minimise publicity and avoid scrutiny

I also contributed to a debate calling on the UK Government to end the legal uncertainties plaguing businesses in Wales surrounding the Wales Continuity Bill.

In the constituency,  Hefin David AM and I met directors and trade union representatives at Peter’s Pies to discuss the company’s future plans, following their announcement on proposed redundancies, and we both attended a site meeting at the Cwm Calon estate to discuss ongoing issues surrounding management of the estate.

I attended a follow up meeting of Council for Wales of Voluntary Youth Services with National Assembly for Wales officials to discuss the Council’s submissions in respect of a Youth Parliament.

I was pleased to be able to visit Project Bernie, which aims to reduce the number of deliberate grass fires in the Aberbargoed and Caerphilly area.  Finally I am grateful to Alzheimers Society Cymru for providing Dementia Friends training for my constituency office staff and myself.
