New figures show the unfairness of the bedroom tax in Caerphilly.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has just indicated that there has been a massive increase in housing rent arrears during the past year.
In response to the figures below, Wayne David, MP for Caerphilly, has made a strong attack upon the bedroom tax and its impact on the Borough.
Mr David said,”These figures are quite appalling and show how the bedroom tax is impacting upon hard-pressed council tenants. It is very clear that people are struggling to meet the increases in rent which they are facing and many people are unable to make the payments. A 32% increase in rent arrears in one year is quite unprecedented. Many of those facing increases are disabled. This highlights the fact that the bedroom tax is placing a huge and unfair pressure on those who cannot bear the burden.
“There now can be no doubt that the bedroom tax is wrong and the sooner it is scrapped the better. That is why Labour is committed to abolishing it as soon as it wins power”.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has indicted that £1,259,000 is owed in rent arrears this year compared to only £947,000 last year before the bedroom tax was introduced. This represents a 32% increase.
