Economic recovery concerns

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has expressed his serious concern about the nature of the economic recovery in the Caerphilly Borough and throughout the rest of the United Kingdom.

Wayne David says that it is of course good news that unemployment is coming down.  But the nature of this so-called economic recovery is extremely worrying.  With increasing self-employment, zero-hour contracts and more flexible-hour jobs, working people are facing unprecedented insecurity.  They are also finding themselves in a situation where they are signing-away hard fought for workplace rights in order to secure employment.

At the same time the rate of inflation is higher than wage levels.  The result is that many people, although they are in employment, are experiencing a fall in their standard of living.

All this is happening, says Wayne David, when the rich are continuing to get richer and the gap between the rich and everyone else is getting ever greater.

Wayne David said, “Caerphilly County Borough is experiencing all the national trends but more so.  The much-trumpeted economic recovery is laced with declining living standards and poorer working conditions.  The area has traditionally relied on coal mining and the nature of today’s economic growth is accentuating the long-standing economic and social problems”.
