Lansbury Park

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has expressed his outrage that the Lansbury Park Estate in Caerphilly has been ranked the “most deprived community in Wales”.

According to the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation, Lansbury Park, or St James 3, has been named by the Welsh Government as the most disadvantaged community in Wales. More than 1,900 communities are ranked by looking at factors such as income, employment, education and health.

Rhyl West 2 had been named as the most deprived community in the previous two reports in 2008 and 2011. Rhyl West has now been overtaken by Lansbury Park.

Wayne David, the local MP said, “This is truly shocking news. Lansbury Park has suffered from a whole range of problems over the past few years. A recent report showed that the Westminster Government’s welfare reform cuts have hit the least well-off in the estate very hard indeed”.

Mr David added, “Huge investment is needed in Lansbury Park to improve the facilities which are available to the community. It is therefore essential that the local authority has the resources to make this investment. It is vital that the ConDem Government ensure that adequate resources are released to help communities like Lansbury Park and welfare reform does not hit the least well-off. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the fortunes of Lansbury Park and areas like it will only be reversed when we have a Labour Government in Westminster.
