Wales needs Europe for jobs, security and peace

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly and former Wales Office Minister, has said that it is vital for Wales that Britain remains a member of the European Union.  He has also said that the pro-Europe campaign needed to focus on “bread and butter issues”.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Wales Council of the European Movement in Brecon, the MP for Caerphilly said that “the debate over the next few weeks about Britain’s membership of the European Union will become increasingly intense”.

Mr David argued that if the Remain campaign is to be successful then it will be essential to avoid becoming embroiled in the fine detail of the pro-European case.  Instead, Mr David said that the Remain campaign needed to focus on “the basics and fundamentals”.

Mr David said “The Remain campaign needs to repeat time and time again three essential messages.  Firstly, the European Union is vital for the economic success of Wales.  Thousands of Welsh jobs depend on the European single market.  Secondly, if we are to successfully tackle the problems of the modern world then we need to co-operate across national borders.  That means working within the European Union.  And thirdly, we should point out that the European Union has helped to preserve the peace of our continent after two bloody world wars.  We need to look to the future and not back to the nationalist divisions of the past”.
