Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has condemned the Leave campaign in the strongest possible terms. Sam Gould, prominent member of UKIP, and a leading Leave campaigner, has posted a video on Facebook which is ‘a calculated lie from beginning to end’.
On the video, Mr Gould states that Wayne David instructed the local Council to move a UKIP stall in Caerphilly town centre on Saturday morning. Wayne David emphatically says this was not the case and his denial has been confirmed by Gwent Police.
Since the posting of the video, Wayne David has been subjected to verbal abuse and intimidation on the streets of Caerphilly and on Twitter and Facebook from Leave supporters.
Wayne David said, “Sam Gould knows that when the Police asked the Leave supporters to move their stall (for, I am told, safety reasons as it was close to a zebra crossing), I was not in the vicinity. I was in a Constituency Advice Surgery. His comments are a down-right lie and is an attack upon the integrity of the Police. It is basic to our democracy that we all understand that the Police must act in an impartial manner to protect the public and uphold the law.
“Caerphilly is seeing an unpleasant side of the Leave campaign. I hope people will see through this abuse and intimidation and cast their votes on 23 June on the basis of argument and not because of loutish behaviour and lies”.
