Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, and Hefin David, Labour Assembly Member for Caerphilly, have joined Labour Councillor Sean Morgan of Nelson in criticising Barclays Bank for its decision to close its branch in Nelson without consultation.
A week ago Barclays Bank announced that it intended to close its Nelson branch on 16 December. This means that the nearest Barclays Bank branch for Nelson people will be in Ystrad Mynach.
The decision by Barclays Bank was taken without any consultation with customers of the bank in Nelson, nor was there consultation with members of the public and elected representatives.
Having made the decision to close the branch, Barclays now want to have consultation on a “new way of banking”.
Wayne David said, “Barclay’s attitude is totally unacceptable. Barclays should have consulted with its customers and local people, and their representatives, before any decision was taken. Barclay’s must think again.”
Hefin David added, “The high-handed attitude of Barclays is unhelpful. It is ridiculous that Barclay’s are now asking us about the impact of the closure on the local community when they have said that a decision has already been taken.”
Cllr Sean Morgan said, “This is a devastating decision and I would urge the banks’ leaders to rethink this decision as there is ample opportunity to save costs by downsizing this branch without leaving the community bereft of the many services the bank offers”.
