Department for Work and Pensions

Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has indicated that he is “strongly opposed” to the closure of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) office in Claude Road, Caerphilly.

The Caerphilly closure is part of a Government plan to close 103 DWP offices across the country. Contrary to standard practice, Wayne David, as the local MP, has not been informed of the closure plans and has written a strongly worded letter to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

Mr David said “I am very concerned that the Government are planning to close offices and reduce the number of staff. The Caerphilly office ┬áin Claude Road provides an important ‘backroom’ service. Closure of the office will be a blow to the economy of Caerphilly town and will hugely inconvenience staff if they have to travel further afield to work.

“The Government has admitted that they expect around 700 DWP staff across the country to lose their jobs and they have refused to rule out compulsory redundancies. My concern is that there could be job losses in Caerphilly. I am therefore calling on the Government to think again about their closure programme.”
