Local Labour politicians have said the announcement to close Tesco House in north Cardiff could have “profound consequences” for Caerphilly constituents.

Tesco have said are consulting on plans to close Tesco House, putting 1,200 jobs at risk, with call centre operations moving to Dundee site where 200 jobs will be created.

Hefin David AM and Wayne David MP said they were intent on working with the USDAW Trade Union to offer any support they could. In a joint statement they said, “Tesco House is situated only a few miles outside the Caerphilly constituency and this announcement will have negative consequences for all Caerphilly constituents working there. USDAW have informed us at least one hundred of the 1,200 employees live in the Caerphilly constituency and naturally we’re extremely concerned by the impact of these job losses on all families concerned. We will be working closely with the union to support our constituents in any way we can”.

A spokesperson for USDAW said; “We will now enter into consultation talks with the company over the coming weeks to look at the business case for the proposed closure. Our priorities are to keep as many members as possible in employment, whether that is with Tesco or other local employers, and to get the best possible deal for our members. In the meantime we are providing the help, advice and support Usdaw members need through this process.”
