Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has said he is “utterly disgusted” about the latest revelations that drinks parties took place in the garden of 10 Downing Street in May 2020. He has called on the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to come clean about this and other parties that are said to have taken place during lockdown and were against the COVID regulations in place at the time.
An email, which has been leaked to ITV News, shows that over 100 staff were invited to a drinks party in the garden of 10 Downing Street in May 2020. Those who were invited were told to “bring your own booze”. This was at the height of lockdown, and it has been reported that Boris Johnson and his wife attended.
The UK Conservative Government had previously launched an investigation into allegations that Christmas parties were held in Downing Street in December 2020. Boris Johnson is now refusing to come clean about the May 2020 drinks party, and instead is hiding behind the investigation, saying it will investigate this party as well.
Wayne David said, “I am utterly disgusted by the Prime Minister’s actions. We now know that not only was Boris Johnson aware of the parties in Downing Street during lockdown, he attended them. It’s time for the Prime Minister to stop hiding behind Whitehall inquiries and finally come clean.
“It is appalling that Boris Johnson has blatantly broken his own Government’s COVID rules when the rest of the country was in a strict lockdown. There cannot be one rule for the Westminster Government and another rule for everyone else. Boris Johnson is a disgrace”.
