Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has expressed his “real concern” about the increasing poverty levels in Wales at a meeting of the Welsh Grand Committee in the House of Commons, Westminster.

Mr David referred to a report by the Bevan Foundation written in November 2021. The report entitled ‘A Snapshot of Poverty in Winter 2021, indicated that 4 in 10 of Welsh households are struggling to make ends meet and are unable to afford anything beyond the everyday essentials.

Wayne David said, “We need to place a spotlight on this totally unacceptable level of poverty. The gap between rich and poor has grown during the pandemic. The Welsh Government is doing what it can to address the issue of poverty in Wales, but we need to recognise that the reasons why poverty is now such a problem are down to Conservative Government policies. The £20 cut in Universal Credit was a body blow to many families and now inflation and rising domestic fuel costs are adding hugely to the pressure.

“Central government must take action now to address the situation. It can begin by ending VAT on domestic fuel”.
