Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, has visited and given a talk to students at two large secondary schools in the Caerphilly constituency following UK Parliament Week 2022.

Pupils listened to their MP before asking tough and thought-provoking questions on a number of issues including the environment, the next election, the state of politics in Westminster, equal rights, support for schools and mental health. They were also concerned about the cost-of-living crisis and where to access support so that they could pass this information on to anyone who needs it.

The visits were organised by Mrs Knowles from Lewis Girls’ School and Mrs Jenkins at Lewis School Pengam who wanted their students to learn more about how to affect change, what a Member of Parliament does, and what a day-in-the-life of a MP might look like.

Mr David said “It is often said but it’s true – young people are our future. That’s why I was so pleased to visit Lewis Girls’ School and Lewis School Pengam and talk with groups of pupils from both schools.

“And both groups were brilliant! The pupils were engaged and thoroughly engaging. They asked excellent questions and were clearly interested in all the important issues of our time – from climate change to the cost of living crisis, from the need for more equality in our country, to the necessity to eliminate prejudice in our society.

“I am more optimistic about our future than I have been for a long time”.
