Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly, will join with Members of the Senedd and local councillors to attend the launch of the ‘Ukrainian Gratitude Orchard in Wales’.

This event will take place from 11am on Saturday the 27th of January in Morgan Jones Park.

The project, a collaboration between the Ukrainians in Caerphilly Group, Climate Action Caerffili, Keep Wales Tidy and Caerphilly County Borough Council, will see trees planted by Ukrainian refugees, their hosts, and public figures.

There will also be a display of Ukrainian culture, music, and the performance of a song in Welsh by Ukrainian singers to express their gratitude. The event is dedicated to the upcoming 2nd anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Wayne David MP said “It is important to stand by the people of Ukraine, especially at such a terrible time. Wales is an internationalist country and has always given support and help to those in need. We did this with refugees fleeing the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and I am proud that Caerphilly, and many other parts of Wales, have done so today”.

Yulia Bond, who moved to Caerphilly after the Russian invasion and founded the Ukrainians in Caerphilly group, said, “This orchard and its future fruits will stand as a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainians who sought refuge in Caerphilly County Borough during the ruinous Russo-Ukrainian war.”

“I am incredibly grateful for the role that the Welsh Government, and Welsh people, have played in helping us to settle in Wales”.
